A taste of Bahraini local food

download (1)Every country has its unique traditional food, however Bahrain’s traditional food includes fish, meat, rice, and dates all at once. Weird isn’t it !

One of the most famous Bahraini dishes is Machboos , which is made up of meat or fish served with rice. When we arrived to Bahrain we heard many people talk about this dish, we were curious to know what is it and how does it taste. So, we visited Villa Mamas Machboos-3-smrestaurant for a late lunch. From the name you might think it is very modern and nicely decorated. But it is actually quiet conventional with the menus it proposes; So leave your preconceived notions at the border, and make it a point to step outside your comfort zone while travelling through the various dishes of this restaurant we were greeted by a friendly, smiley hostess who let us pick our table.

The menu was varied and truly authentic Bahraini. The bread, dips, and herbs arriveddownload quickly and were extremely fresh and delicious – olives with some delicious marinade (pomegranate, etc) , cucumber-yogurt salad, baba ghanoush the bahraini way (eggplant starter), crunchy fresh veggies, fresh walnuts prawns in Tomato Sauce. We shared a Chicken Machboos which was absolutely delicious.

For mains we tried the Baked Shari and the special pan-fried king-fish steaks with 3beriani rice the most famous bahraini dish. Both were excellent. It is important to note that Bahraini people like their fish well done so if you like it medium, let them know in advance. Moreover, they put hot spices and spicy blends with almost everything, if you are not a big fan of pepper make sure to inform them.

For dessert we had the semolina honey lemon syrup cake and rose tea  which came with some small squared Zalabiya333c5edc59ddb7dbe164c4ea5c85bc35h sweet. Zalabiyah is made by deep frying a wheat flour batter in pretzel or circular shapes, which are then soaked in sugar syrup.

The chef Mrs Roaya Saleh, came to our table to say hi, as we kept complimenting her food. She was very friendly and we were surprised by the fact that she prepares all the dishes alone without any chef’s help. The food is plentiful, portions are very generous, and everything was of great quality – fresh and deliciously cooked. We truly enjoyed the food, the service and the ambiance.
